The Tall Street Journal

So at 6ft2, I’m very tall. If I hadn’t noticed this fact, I would have found out very quickly – from the ten strangers a day who feel the need to let me know.

There are many strange things about being tall but one of the most annoying has to be complete strangers (or fashion professionals incognito??) who feel compelled to tell me that as a tall girl, I should not wear heels.

I didn’t wear heels until my early 20’s because I couldn’t get them in my size but now I can and you can’t get me out of them – particularly 3 or 4 inch one’s on a night out.

Now look, people don’t go around telling short girls they shouldn’t wear flat shoes so why do 60% of the peopl e I meet insist on telling me that, as a tall girl, I shouldn’t wear heels?

Tall women should wear heels and here’s my top reasons why:

- As stylist and fashionista Jay Manuel says “Everyone can look like a supermodel with a bootleg trouser and a high heel” (it does quite ring true if you say ‘ballet flat’ instead of ‘high heel’ , does it?).

- They make you seem leaner and slimmer.

- The give you the best walk which just can’t be replicated in flats.

- They give you better legs, slimmer ankles and accentuate the best of your figure.

- The are the glamorous and somehow that changes how you feel and behave.

- Is your love-life lacking? Well get some high heels on! No, not just because men seem to love them but because, according to the latest research by Dr Maria Cerruoto , wearing high heels improves your pelvic floor muscles, and we modern girls all know what that does for you.

- They make you taller. Yes, I really did say that! Your height is something to be proud of and to be honest, when you’re very tall, 3 inches isn’t actually going to make a whole lot of difference to how tall you look (6ft and 6ft3 all look the same from down there).

- They make your feet look smaller.

- When was the last time you read the words “fabulous flat pump”? Exactly.

Great article and I could not agree more. There is nothing sadder than a tall girl afraid to wear heels!

I hate that. I am 6'4" and people always tell me "wow your tall" or " your so tall" as if I didnt know. It gets very irritating. i've even had people in the grocery store ask to get them something they could not reach. Tall people dont go around saying "my your little" or " your closer to the ground, would you pick that up for me." I dont see why little people have to say stuff like that.

I agree 100%. Interesting take on the obvious. Even I have some high heels so to speak. I have a really neat pair of alligator western styled boots. Because they are unusual but really nice boots, I get a lot of complements. But then they do make me a lot closer to 6 ft 9 or 10. My problem is finding a size 14 shoe that doesn't look like a pair of coffins.

thank you this is so true.

I salute the nonconformity and our differences in this world.

When shorter people say we shouldn't wear heels it is often because they feel inferior,
they feel a bit jealous or they simply want to shape the world to some sort of "standard"
that they recognize and feel "safe" with.

Every man and woman is unique and should continue to be so. (Coelho)

I just smile at them and ask "why" - and they always step into the trap! "But you're so tall"
- and? - in the end they use to get quite embarassed because in the end most of them use
to realize their mistake - That I am - in contrary to what they thought - not at all ashamed
over my height or to be different and hopefully , maybe , they learned a small lesson.

Keep on rocking tall sisters! wear heels when you feel like it
and smile to the world!

I wear what I want to suit the situation and my mood. Many heels are very uncomfortable and can cause physical damage to you if you wear them too much, but I have no problem with the extra height and there are some that I can walk in all day. If you wear them you must be comfortable with yourself and walk proud otherwise you will look foolish.

I think wearing a comfortable shoe with some heel is excellent for business situations - it shows you have great confidence in yourself, even if you are the tallest in the room. It will show you are not retiring.

From a male perspective, I always think that tall women in heels must be comfortable with their height, and I think it is very important (and attractive) that someone is happy with themselves as they are. That said, of course, you may be tall, perfectly happy with yourself and wearing flat shoes because you want to wear flat shoes!! Equally, you may be short and unhappy in heels. I guess the important point is to get to know someone before making this judgement!!! I would never presume to tell someone what shoes to wear, but then I'm tall and so automatically nicer!!!

tall is tall and short is short. with heels or without heels. nobody can not compel people to wear everything! diagnosis is with people, that the they what wear!
